Local Tax Structure

The State of Tennessee does not levy nor directly administer property taxes. It is levied on a local level, however, as tax on real and personal property, thus providing primary funding for city and county governments throughout the state. In addition, there is no State, County, nor City income tax.

Business Tax: A privilege tax is imposed on business giving them the right to do business in Lewis County. Depending on your business or classification, determination will be made as to what percent of gross sales make up the business tax. The County Clerk’s office can provide specific information.

Businesses file a schedule of tangible personal property on the premises as of January 1. Property includes office machines, furniture, machinery, vehicles, tools, equipment (owned, leased out and leased by) at current value. Tax is levied on 30% of this value at the present rate of $1.13 per $100 for the city and $2.28 per hundred for the county. For businesses in Hohenwald, the personal property tax is combined $2.99 per hundred. Personal property taxes are deductible from business tax.
